Special Honorary Degree Ceremonies
The conferral of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on His Holiness,
Professor Shirin Ebadi and Archbishop Desmond Tutu marked
a historic first for both UBC and SFU. The two separate convocation
ceremonies for the three Nobel Laureates were a dramatic statement
that the world needs visionaries of this caliber if it is
to steer a course for humanity. They were equally a statement
that universities have a role to play in that challenge.
UBC’s convocation took place at the Chan Center for
the Performing Arts on Monday April 19, 2004. Following remarks
by the Honourable Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of
British Columbia and UBC President Dr. Martha Piper, the three
degrees were conferred by Chancellor Allan McEachern.
This was also the occasion for His Holiness to deliver a
Keynote Address, to launch the academic conference on Tibet
in the Contemporary World and to inaugurate the IAR’s
Contemporary Tibetan Studies Program. The speech underscored
His Holiness’ keen interest in seeing a high level of
scholarship devoted to Tibet at a time when it is undergoing
rapid social, political and economic change. Research is critical,
he emphasized, for guiding exchanges on policy issues.
SFU’s Special Convocation took place at the wonderful,
newly restored Christ Church Cathedral on Tuesday morning,
April 20, 2004. SFU President Michael Stevenson welcomed these
leading citizens of the world and Chancellor Milton Wong conferred
the honorary Doctor of Laws degrees.
