Applying Compassion and Cross-cultural Understanding in
Today’s Changing World
UBC invites you to help fulfill His Holiness’ vision
Although His Holiness the Dalai Lama has departed Vancouver,
his universal message of peace, tolerance and mutual respect
will remain firmly rooted in UBC’s new graduate program
in Contemporary Tibetan Studies – a meaningful legacy
of his visit.
The Contemporary Tibetan Studies program, part of the Institute
of Asian Research, will be unique in North America. It will
provide insight to policy makers, non-government organizations,
and educators. It will include lessons learned as Tibet’s
people and culture adapt to globalization and rapid social
and political change. This research program will also identify
how the Dalai Lama’s universal ethics of tolerance and
compassion can be applied to pressing world concerns, including
human security, the environment, healthcare and civil rights.
Using the ideals of compassion and universal responsibility,
as well as UBC’s position as a global leader in Asian
research, the Contemporary Tibetan Studies program can positively
impact major issues in Canada, Asia and elsewhere.
