An
undergraduate major in Southeast Asian studies is offered through each
constituent program. Students can pursue Master's programs in International
Studies with concentrations on Southeast Asia at both Oregon and Washington.
It is also possible to pursue Master's programs in some other fields, for
example, Business (Oregon and Washington), Public Affairs (washington),
and International Health (Washington). Students in a number of PhD programs
at each institution are able to focus their research interests on Southeast
Asia. The disciplines most receptive to such a focus include Anthropology,
Economics, Geography, Linguistics, Political Science, Sociology (at all
institutions), Asian Studies (British Columbia and Oregon), and Asian Languages
and Literatures, Ethnomusicology, Nursing, and Public Affairs (Washington).
The structure of the program differs somewhat between Consortium members. The following are the minimum requirements.

Advanced Degrees
University of Washington
A Master of International Studies (MAIS) is available, usually combined
with a Master's program in one of six professional fields: the Graduate
School of Business Administration, the College of Forest Resources, the
School of Law, the School of Marine Affairs, the Graduate School of Public
Affairs, and the School of Public Health. Students take a year-long core
series on international issues and institutions, followed by supplemental
fields (such as Southeast Asian Studies), and proficiency in a foreign
language.
Advanced students also can specialize in Southeast Asian Studies, while pursuing a Master's or PhD in an academic department. Within the framework of departmental requirements they can focus study and research on issues within Southeast Asia.
University of Oregon
A Master of Arts is offered in Asian Studies with a Southeast Asian
major. Three years of Thai or Indonesian are required, plus 45 credits
in Asia-related graduate level courses, of which 27 must focus on Southeast
Asia. A Master of Arts is offered also in International Studies with a
Southeast Asian focus.
Doctoral students must be admitted to a department, and meet its requirements. Within that framework they can focus their study and research on issues within Southeast Asia.
University
of British Columbia
Students may take courses and focus their research on Southeast Asia
in a variety of Arts departments and in other Faculties. Students should
apply to their relevant department, or to the Faculty of Graduate Studies
for an interdisciplinary program of study. The Institute of Asian Research
sponsors seminars and research projects of interest to graduate students.
Master of Arts and PhD degrees in Asian Studies are offered in religion,
economics, political science, geography, history, and literature. In special
cases, degree programs can be arranged jointly between Asian Studies and
other departments. Provisional admission may be given to students who need
to make up prerequisites, but is not normally extended to visa students.
